Warner Bros signs $110B deal with Paramount
- techblueberry 7mo agoThis is such a strange deal, and I can't tell if they're really smarter than I think they are, but I can't imagine trying to run any kind of right-leaning entertainment company having Taylor Sheridan, acknowledging that you have Taylor Sheridan by calling him a "singular genius and content creator" and then driving him away months later because you keep meddling in his creative work. If I was trying to turn Paramount into a like right-leaning culture war friendly entertainment company, I would have given Taylor Sheridan whatever he wanted, and changed the name to "Paramount, brought to you by Taylor Sheridan". I remember when this first started, I thought to myself, how are you going to bring back 80's style American jingoism with only one director doing it, then I find out it was worse then that, because they drove that one director away.

- 7777777phil 7mo agoNetflix has the distribution already, it doesn't need legacy IP. Paramount is betting that combining DC, Harry Potter, GoT, Top Gun, and Star Trek under one roof creates enough gravity to survive. Maybe, but aggregators tend to win online and content suppliers compete each other down to cost. - shimman 7mo agoYou really think Paramount cares about the IP and not just controlling the platforms to wield political power?
- Mindwipe 7mo agoYes, 100%. If they wanted the policial platforms and had offered to buy them from Warner as standalone for a tenth of the cost Warner would have snapped their hand off. They need the IP for scale. That is what this is about.
- techblueberry 7mo agoWalk me through the argument of how they do that or why this is worth $100 billion. Everyone is worried about them owning CNN, but CNN was dying. Their takeover of CBS was a Flubb. I think you could make the argument that part of the reason Trump won was the perception that liberals controlled all media. Change that perception in America, and I think our contrarian nature drives people into the arms of Democrats.
- SmirkingRevenge 7mo agoI think the perception that liberals control the media actually comes a bit from Hollywood and celebrity culture, which is more Progressive than average. People kind of conflate all that with news media (and there is genuine overlap sometimes). But mainly it's driven by right-wing media propaganda. It was never really true, not even really a little. But even so, you can listen to hours and hours of content per day from right-wing personalities driving anti-media grievance. It's been that way for at least two decades. To change the perception, far-right propaganda has to be countered or stopped. If the Ellison's and Weiss start meddling with CNN, it's probably not to counter far-right propaganda, but to spread even more.

- cyrusradfar 7mo agoAnyone already cancel Paramount+ and is a little frustrated you can't do it again? Would make my eve to hear any folks who are going to cancel in protest of this continued consolidation.
