When I taught Intro Chemistry at university, I had a fun bonus project for the students when we got to the unit on thermodynamics. The assignment was to assume that an ideal nuclear device was set off in the eye of a major hurricane such that all of the thermodynamic energy of the explosion was converted to expansion work (and to treat the eye as a closed container). The question was to figure out by how much the diameter of the eye would increase as a result. The correct answer is: about 8 inches.
