Rape is rape, period. Trying to question statistics by redefining what rape is according to your own criterion is, by any sensible definition, being a rape apologist.
Using expressions like "going against the feminist narrative" when talking about rape is not usually a sign of objectivity on such matters.
- planckscnst 14y agoA computer is a computer, period. There are two billion computers in the world today. What did I just tell the average person? The average person probably believes I said there are two billion laptops and desktops in the world. The misdefinition takes place in the mind of the receiver of this information, and it's unavoidable. So in order to not be accidentally deceptive - or to prevent other people from accidentally deceiving themselves, it may be responsible to inform them of what a "computer" is. Ts'o's argument is that yes: in this case, it is the responsibility of the deliverer of such information to try and eliminate the receiver's own misdefinition, and that the absence of such an attempt is deceptive.
- tadfisher 14y agoDirect quote from Jacinta Richardson in support of the Anti-Harassment policy: > Statistics say that 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted, and specifically 1 in 6 women will be raped in their lifetimes; ... > Let's assume there were 700 attendees at LCA, and 10% of those were women. That's 70 women, 25% of whom have been sexually assaulted, or 17 women. Ts'o was saying that, no, the 1 in 4 statistic is a) a result of dubious research, b) does not necessarily apply to a room full of strangers at a technology conference, and c) that using said statistic to push an agenda is misleading at best. No redefinition of rape involved. In fact, Ts'o cited a review of the 1 in 4 study that concludes the conductors of said research was doing exactly that: redefining the term "rape" to bloat the statistics.
- Kell 14y agoWhat about two 16 years old teens having conscient, consenting sex ? In some states that can be considered rape... If I think this kind of definition of rape is dumb... I can't challenge it? .. just because you said so? It's not because some people challenging its definition are rape apologists, that the challenge should be forbidden at all. But yeah... drunk unwilling sex is pretty much rape.
