I Donut Believe – Presenting Third Party Results (Donut Lab)
- coreyh14444 7mo agoI'm not a big "pun" guy, but this is smart. Address skeptics head on.
- stetrain 7mo agoAddressing them head on would be providing verification of your claims alongside the initial announcement, not being intentionally vague and then using reasonable skepticism as marketing.
- naasking 7mo agoIf they did actually achieve something remarkable, giving the skeptics time to bury their own credibility has some advantages.
- stetrain 7mo agoI'm not sure being hesitant to accept claims without evidence is a mark against credibility. I think stringing this out certainly has marketing advantages. But I think if they really had this kind of breakthrough they would be focusing on billion-dollar deals with manufacturers to ramp up capacity rather than internet hype marketing.
- naasking 7mo ago> I'm not sure being hesitant to accept claims without evidence is a mark against credibility. Some skeptics have gone much further than that, calling the Donut battery impossible. The fact that they're taking their time addressing critics might just be an indication that they are making those deals. Time will tell.
- stetrain 7mo ago> The fact that they're taking their time addressing critics might just be an indication that they are making those deals. I think if they were doing so then there would not be much point in trying to market to the internet at large.
- naasking 7mo agoThey haven't said a peep since CES over a month ago where they very quietly talked about their battery, no big fan fare. They seemed to be keeping a pretty low profile, it was all the YouTubers that started a huge hype train. That drove a lot of understandable skepticism, and now they're getting third party tests done to settle the question, no doubt because some investors got nervous about all the skepticism.
- cogman10 7mo agoAddressing the claims one by one is still doing it head on. There's not some logic timeline for this stuff. The slow drip of verification is a smart move IMO. It keeps them in the media for longer (Gabbo) and stops them from being lost in the other 1000 different battery announcement. Hopefully getting them funding I'm guessing they need to start full manufacturing. That said, while this certainly is a promising battery based on the claims, I won't get my hopes up until there's an actual product I can buy.
- Maximilian_Bet 7mo agoThis website serves as the platform for publishing validation results and technical documentation related to the Donut Solid State Battery. Donut Lab has commissioned the internationally renowned VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland to conduct independent measurements of the battery’s performance and key characteristics. Unless otherwise stated, all tests presented here have been conducted by VTT. Full reports will be published alongside detailed video documentation that walks through the procedures, showcases the test setups, and explains the results.

- stetrain 7mo agoTurning verification of your basic claimed battery specifications into a slow drip PR event is certainly a choice.
- ikidd 7mo agoI'd suspect the next set are charge cycle tests so that will take some time. I was certainly skeptical of the C rate claims and those are quick to do and kick out.
- mrtksn 7mo agoThe fast charging test was released as discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47121864 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47121864

- karmakurtisaani 7mo agoThis is most definitely a scam. The battery was not verified to be what they claim it is. It could have been ordered from Temu and packaged to a new wrapping. All the testers did was verify something about how it charges and discharges. They did not invent in secrecy and zero budget a battery worth a Nobel prize. This is a scam.
- user568439 7mo agoCould it be that they are just squeezing a 3rd party battery over its safety limits to make it "real". When ar they supposed to put the Verge motorcycle on the roads?
