The Jacobin piece enthusiastically backs this "left nationalism" vision of the nation as an endless creole friction zone open to every identity and claim, but it sidesteps the harsh truth that applies to every society: if a nation doesn't prioritize its existing citizens first—securing borders, protecting native workers' wages and housing, and preventing welfare systems and public services from becoming overwhelmed by unchecked inflows—the social contract frays, trust erodes, and resentment builds

- FrankWilhoit 8mo agoImmigration is nowhere near the top of the list of things that fray the social contract, erode trust, and build resentment. Corruption, particularly in the administration of "justice", is vastly more important.
- gsf_emergency_6 8mo agoImmigration has a "target" that is easy to get angry at. Corruption also has an "other", but that other is usually physically and even values-wise not that different from one's own tribe >And a man's foes shall be they of his own household
