The irony is that this new payment method has the exact same issue: it's deeply tied to US corporate.
Their site claims that it can only be used on iOS or Android: https://support.wero-wallet.eu/hc/en-us/articles/25599074240401-What-devices-support-the-Wero-app https://support.wero-wallet.eu/hc/en-us/articles/25599074240...
Also:
> It is not possible to use Wero via a web browser or on a computer.
This seems an even worse situation than carrying around a Maestro (mastercard) with me.
- codethief 8mo ago> it's deeply tied to US corporate. In what way specifically? Android and iOS are just the OS the banking apps that implement Wero happen to run on. There is nothing stopping them from releasing a Linux app. Or a web app.
- globular-toast 8mo agoBut they won't though, will they? Or maybe we can look forward to that in another 30 years when they realise they are, once again, dependent on American tech.
- koonsolo 8mo agoYou can't expect them to fix everything all at once. What about the hardware? Let them focus on offering a payment system, and let others focus on their thing.
- padjo 8mo agoIt is comical. Exchanging one set of US overlords for another. I suppose it is possible to use a degoogled android but most people won't be doing that.
- arein3 8mo agoNot even that. Most banking apps have a requirement that android is "certified" by google, ex. They won't run on GrapheneOS
- padjo 8mo agoYep, I'm using Murena, a fork of Lineage OS but have to have a google account to use my banking app. I'm not even sure the bank understand this requirement exists.
