I think you just presented good evidence for my suggestion. All the greatest soccer teams are successful because they are willing to spend big money on getting loyal players, from anywhere.

  An EU soccer team funded by the EU to win against all other European teams. Wow, I fear people would hate that with a burning passion. Creating national unity is hard. It doesn't happen overnight -- maybe if you are attacked by an external force.
