Renewables don't just benefit the environment. They're literally free energy machines, perpetual motion alike. You want as much energy as possible for as cheap as possible, you want renewables. You want energy sovereignty without fuel imports, you want renewables. Apart from the part where you don't get to choose when they generate. Hopefully less of an issue in a continent–sized interconnected grid.
