Today on "Hacker" News: a third of the commenters wring their hands and question the morality and legality of subverting copy protection on software almost half a century old.
- kstrauser 8mo agoTo be fair, I might question the legality of it, although from a purely academic perspective. Like, exactly how illegal could it be, and are there any possible paths of it actually being enforced? That’s an interesting conversation to have. In practice, I couldn’t care less and it’s obviously morally OK.
- TMWNN 8mo agoThere is no legality to debate. As of 2003 there is a DMCA exemption for "computer programs protected by dongles that prevent access due to malfunction or damage and which are obsolete". <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_preservation#Legal_issues https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_preservation#Legal_...>
