Early AR was a thing 10, 15 years ago - along with the dawn of smartphones, accellerometers and cameras. Second generation was the google glass and the like, over ten years ago now. Third generation was Microsoft's HoloLens and Magic Leap. Fourth (current?) generation is Apple's Vision and I suppose the rayban things. There's probably generations I'm missing but I'm no expert.
Anyway, AR has had nearly two decades to "start to reach customers" and honestly, I don't think it's broken through. Not even the 3d environment scanning 'measure' apps see frequent use (in my limited experience). It's always remained a gimmick.
TL;DR I disagree with the author's assertion in multiple levels. It's not "early AR", and I don't think it's actually reaching customers, let alone at a volume that will recuperate its investments.
