They were profitable as early as 2005 (http://www.salesforce.com/company/investor/quarterly-results/ http://www.salesforce.com/company/investor/quarterly-results...).
I don't know what income statements you were looking at (just because they lost money in 2012 does not make them an unprofitable company).
