The start menu is a React app!
- itopaloglu83 9mo agoSimply ridiculous, a vital part of the OS is being drawn by a web framework, so that they can mingle it with ads more efficiently.
- p_ing 9mo agoStart menu uses XAML Islands, not React. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5072911-explorer-the-start-menu-and-other-xaml-dependent-apps-might-not-start-or-close-unexpectedly-on-some-enterprise-devices-d2d30684-4e2b-47f5-9899-a00a8e0acb09 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5072911-explorer...
- wizzwizz4 9mo agoIt uses React Native, via https://github.com/microsoft/react-native-xaml https://github.com/microsoft/react-native-xaml. This is probably mixed with "native" XAML components, but it's still firmly in the "buggy React app" category in my book: a framework that works well with React probably has the same design flaws that lead to React-esque crashes. It's very difficult to find information about this online: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46471701 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46471701 is the only thing that remotely smells like a secondary source, with most of the rest of the search results being obvious ChatGPT output. (That, too, is Microsoft's fault.)
