Extra cognitive load while driving isn't the smartest idea probably.

  That's debatable. It is hard to gain some location awareness and get better at navigating without extra cognitive load. You have to actively train your brain to get better, there is no easy way that I know of.

  For most people driving is not very cognitively demanding so adding some load can actually increase attentiveness.
