Those are great points, thanks for mentioning this, re-enabling overflow checks for release builds would indeed make the code safer with only a config change. It's great that there are lots of options other than wrapping as well, checked, saturating, etc -- that at the cost of a little inefficiency make code that is robust to such failures really obvious.
