Desperately Seeking Squircles (2018)
- hexasquid 9mo agoIntake of breath from the zune owners
- Lare2 9mo agoWasn't Nokia the one that first used squircles in a phone. Why all references for anything always start with apple.
- flobosg 9mo ago> Nokia, despite its late entry with MeeGo’s Harmattan UI, found the squircle unclaimed and ran with it beautifully. ―https://interuserface.net/2011/06/own-a-shape/ https://interuserface.net/2011/06/own-a-shape/
- rob74 9mo ago"Squircle" is a bit of a misnomer, isn't it? A "classic" rectangle with rounded corners is a rectangle with circle segments added at its corners, while a squircle actually has nothing to do with a circle. It reminds me more of the way curves in railways are designed: one might think that these are circle segments too, but that would mean that when going from the straight track to the curve, the centripetal (and centrifugal) acceleration would go from 0 to max instantly, which would lead to a sudden jolt, increased track wear etc. Instead, transition curves (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Track_transition_curve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Track_transition_curve) are used to gradually increase the lateral force.
- deruta 9mo agoAs I see it, the name fits perfectly. If the superellipse is a square at n -> inf and a circle at n = 2, then in-between... welp, a squircle.
- otikik 9mo agoThis must be one of those things that people that notice kerning notice.
- saagarjha 9mo agoI know it's frowned upon to comment on the formatting of a post, and this isn't really a complaint but more of a bug report since someone from Figma might stumble upon this. Your fake cursor assets are not Retina.
- flobosg 9mo agoSame with the rendered math formulas, they could get a bit more love. Great post nevertheless!
