Running a porn site or image/video sharing service? You're going to go through a ton of bandwidth and that might end up being your bottleneck way more than performance.

Every web app is a unique snowflake and what works for you (EC2/Dedicated, SSD, RAM bandwidth) is just as unique. Much more important than building your own server, is fully understanding your requirements, and deploying the appropriate solution. But it is still wicked fun to build a server.
