Because there was no "year 0" so centuries began incrementing at the year 0001 to today. Jan 1, 2001 was the start of the latest century. It will end after Dec 31, 2100.

- toast0 10mo agoThere was no year 0, but there was also no year 1; 1970-01-01 is the first day, so we're still in the first century. And there was no previous century. As the epoch began, the K&R imbued it with a rich pre-history, but all of that stuff didn't really happen; it just makes nice things to email about.
