The same argument could be made of photoshopping someone's face on to a nude body. But for the most part, nobody cares (the only time I recall it happening was when it happened to David Brent in The Office).
- QuercusMax 10mo agoMaking fake revenge porn is an EXTREMELY common way to harass your ex.
- estearum 10mo agoMaybe "common" within the subset of people who viciously harass their exes?
- QuercusMax 10mo agoYes, that's the implication. If you're going to harass your ex, sharing their real or fake nudes is a very common thing for people to do.
- UncleMeat 10mo ago> But for the most part, nobody cares IMO, the fact that you would say this is further evidence of rape culture infecting the world. I assure you that people do care about this. And friction and quality matters. When you make it easier to generate this content and make the content more convincing, the number of people who do this will go up by orders of magnitude. And when social media platforms make it trivial to share this content you've got a sea change in this kind of harassment.
- GoatInGrey 10mo agoHow is "It's acceptable because people perform a lesser form of the same behavior" an argument at all? Taken to its logical extreme, you could argue that you shouldn't be prevented from punching children in the face because there are adults in the world who get punched in the face. Obviously, this is an insane take, but it applies the same logic you've outlined here.
- lynndotpy 10mo ago"For a Linux user, you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially ..." Convincingly photoshopping someones face onto a nude body takes time, skills, effort, and access to resources. Grok lowers the barrier to be less effort than it took for either you or I to write our comments. It is now a social phenomenon where almost every public image of a woman or girl on the site is modified in this manner. Revenge porn photoshops happened before, but not to this scale or in this type of phenomenon. And there is safety in numbers. If one person photoshops a highschool classmate nude, they might find themself on a registry. For lack of knowing the magnitude, if myriad people are doing it around the country, then do you expect everyone doing that to be litigated that extensively?
- gbnwl 10mo agoFriend, you are putting too much effort to debate a topic that is implicitly banned on this website. This post has already been hidden from the front page. Hacker News is openly hostile to anything that even mildly paints a handful of billionaires in a poor light. But let's continue to deify Dang as the country descneds openly into madness.
- QuercusMax 10mo agoIt's still on my front page at position 22.
- gbnwl 10mo agoI also see it back now too, despite it being removed earlier. Do you have faith in the HN algo? Position 22 despite having more votes and comments and being more recent than all of the posts above it?
- QuercusMax 10mo agoI have no opinions on the HN algo as I have not spent any time considering it.
- jandrese 10mo agoFrankenstein porn was not exactly uncommon, but this lowers the barrier to entry even more and we really don't need it.
