Ruby used to be extremely slow and memory-hogging.

  It was never really any worse than python. I wonder if the new generation of Ruby runtimes like ZJIT, TruffleRuby and JRuby if we get roughly the same speed as JavaScript if that will change what people complain about. They'll still complain, obviously, because every language seems to have haters. :D
