- codedokode 11mo agoInteresting, from the thread I learned that Apple have removed "advanced data protection" in UK [1]. I think, is is available even in Russia, but not in UK. That's why you cannot rely on commercial companies protecting your data - they are always ok with negotiating secret deals behind the closed doors. The only ones who are on your side are unpaid open-source volunteer developers. [1] https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgj54eq4vejo https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgj54eq4vejo
- halJordan 11mo agoApple never removed adp, the usg stepped in and came to an agreement with the uk govt.
- mbirth 11mo agoThey have removed it. UK users see a message: Apple can no longer offer Advanced Data Protection (ADP) in the United Kingdom to new users. People that have it already enabled can still use it as Apple is not allowed to talk about the "secret" order to disable it. However, there are rumours that they will block iCloud sync at some point until people disable the encryption again.
- jamwil 11mo agoHow are you drawing that conclusion? Apple elected to publicly withdraw the entire feature from the country rather than negotiate a secret deal behind closed doors. The blame here is with the UK Government, not Apple.
