I mean to say that after being the subject of some really stressful and severe racial harassment, I don't think it would have been possible to take that comment as anything other than racist. In hostile work environments, it is really hard to take comments and questions in a straight-forward manner. This is how toxic cultures poison the ability of people to work together, by undermining the mental and emotional health of the staff.
