Google Maps heatmap of GitHub repository stargazers
- rviscomi 14y agocool thanks!
- jlgreco 14y agoThe data for the west coast is rather unexpected for me. Does anyone have any insight into that? Maybe this is a case of my intuitive sense of the size of NYC really not doing reality justice?
- bduerst 14y agoUnexpected how?
- jlgreco 14y agoI expected it to be heavier on the west-coast than the east coast.
- bduerst 14y agoLarger area of high population density on the east coast is my guess, without looking at the actual numbers.
- rviscomi 14y agoMay also have to do with the particular repository. The demo page is featuring trunk8, which may be more popular with the media folk in NYC. Maybe people on the west coast are more concerned with privacy and opt out of revealing their location in their GitHub profiles.
- rm999 14y agoI'm curious when that screenshot was taken. If it was at 8 am EST (5 am PST) that would make perfect sense.
- rviscomi 14y agoThe screenshot was taken in the middle of the day (eastern time). The repository was already a couple months old by that time, though, so it's not like news hadn't traveled across the country yet.
- dmbass 14y agoAre you talking about the sample image in the readme? I don't think it says what repository that data corresponds to. The guy is also New York based so it might just be that his github social network is skewed to the right coast.
- RivieraKid 14y agoThis is off-topic, but Red Dwarf is also one of the best sitcoms. My nickname is inspired by it :)
- lazydon 14y agoMost interesting for me was that green patch on Iran. Didn’t expect it to be that big. It's a mysterious country.
