And Sundar's too with the latest BS about Android sideloading.
- preisschild 11mo agoTbf at least Android is open source and AOSP itself doesnt have this limitation
- 0cf8612b2e1e 11mo agoSort of. Google has slowly migrated all essential services into closed source libraries they control.
- drnick1 11mo agoThis isn't quite true. My GrapheneOS phone isn't lacking any "essential service." The only issue is that some apps distributed through the Play Store (or an alternative frontend like Aurora) that depend on proprietary Google libraries won't work. But this is a problem that rests with the developers of the apps, not AOSP per se.
- preisschild 11mo agoBeen using AOSP without Google Mobile Services for a decade now (LineageOS and GrapheneOS) without needing those "essential services"
- bnjms 11mo agoTbf I haven’t heard any news that Alphabet is requiring all sellers that paid off phones to be able to change to AOSP.
- GeekyBear 11mo agoIs Google going to require that device makers provide unlocked bootloaders?

- Larrikin 11mo agoIt may be too late, but its probably a good idea to to shift the language and start saying installing software on your own device. Google likes the term sideloading because it implies its a weird hack to not get all your software from their store.
