It's kind of hilarious to me when the tech world collides with the high-end fashion world. On the one hand, I get how absurd this seems from a tech perspective. On the other hand, dropping a couple hundred dollars on a fashion item that will be trendy for a season among a certain group... it's no different from any other high-end fashion accessory. It's just that the two worlds so rarely overlap.
- acedTrex 1y agoYou can see just from this thread how the tech world reacts to the fashion world.
- qazxcvbnmlp 1y agoHN commenter logic: 'if I don't understand it, this is clearly wrong' 'If someone doesn't spend money irrationally like I spend money irrationally its bad' There is indeed a blind spot.

- rchaud 1y agoThe fashion world's biggest sellers are handbags and shoes, which are practical purchases and tend to feature pretty intricate design details. This is a Speedo for a phone, and it makes Apple's already over-the-top descriptions of its products sound even more absurd.
- reducesuffering 1y agoNothing about the fashion world’s $5000 bags is practical. It’s 99% status signaling
- bigyabai 1y ago> It’s 99% status signaling So is buying a $5,000 laptop. Much like shoes and bags, a kernel of practical demand quickly grows into an unlimited demand for vain materialism.
- Razengan 1y ago> So is buying a $5,000 laptop. No they actually do shit
- bigyabai 1y agoSo does a $5,000 bag. 99% of owning a $5,000 laptop is virtue signalling.

- morshu9001 1y agoI don't like either of these two worlds. Yes, plenty of people will buy an expensive laptop/desktop that's only ever used to run benchmarks. If anything I could admire the $5K bag more if it's actually nicer than the cheaper ones, but a lot of the time it's not.
- chaostheory 1y agoApple is a fashion company when you think about it
- ocdtrekkie 1y agoThe Google Glass/DVF collaboration was a notable example of cringe in this area. https://archive.nytimes.com/runway.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/09/dvf-gives-google-glasses-a-spin-on-the-runway/ https://archive.nytimes.com/runway.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09...

- lern_too_spel 1y agoApple has been a fashion brand for a few decades now.
- tokioyoyo 1y agoI still firmly believe that it’s made for Chinese market, where it will sell really well.
- conception 1y agoIt’s only being sold in one US store so your belief is not unfounded.
- morshu9001 1y agoThese always overlap in dumb ways. Had to microwave my $400 Ferragamo wallet to kill the NFC chip inside that kept making my phone buzz.
