The cynic in me says some PM rolled out it out because they had an internal metric to hit.
I know a lot of people who are bilingual (or trilingual) and they utterly loathe it.
- LtWorf 1y agoThe only explanation I can give myself is that Americans can't comprehend the idea that a single person might speak more than one language. It's pretty funny considering how google claims that their hiring practices make them hire only the most intelligent people on the planet.
- lukan 1y agoCan't you just deactivate it?
- LtWorf 1y agoNo idea, but also why is it activated when I've been watching english content on that account for several years?
- lukan 1y agoI never experienced subs I could not deactivate. And why they activated it? Well, because they own their plattform and do what they want with it. (I think they have done worse)
- LtWorf 1y agoNobody here was talking about subtitles.
- lukan 1y agoThen about what? I assumed that was meant with "dubbing".
- LtWorf 1y agohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubbing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubbing
- lukan 1y agoOh, then I guess I did not wanted to understand. Does youtube really just changes the audiotrack of videos? I never encountered that so far.
- LtWorf 1y agoYep, with a robotic sounding voice. They decided I don't speak english so I either download the video externally or I must every single time select english as audio track.
- Insanity 1y agoI’m one of those who hate it. I’m trilingual, but when watching something in any foreign language I just want to read subtitles instead of “dubs”. It is of course worse when it tries to do so on a language I already speak.
- selfhoster11 1y agoI can see it being useful. Lots of people who don't know English are out there.
