The “cost of bugs” curve is incoherent nonsense for these reasons:
- We don’t care how much a bug costs to fix if we choose never to fix it. We do not automatically fix all bugs.
- The cost to find certain bugs early on is prohibitive, compared to waiting until the product is fully realized, when many subtle or systemic bugs become quite easy to find.
- It’s not hard to imagine an early stage “bug fix” in the requirements that leads to missed opportunities. For instance, if I were present at the beginning of Uber I think I could have persuaded them that Uber is totally unworkable as a business idea.
- Nothing whatsoever in the nature of bug fixing makes a bug necessarily harder to fix over time. It’s just that certain requirements bugs can snowball.
