- mort96 1y agoPromiscuous mode is just when the WiFi chipset picks up all the WiFi packet it sees. In the normal mode, the chipset will drop everything that's meant for a different MAC address. The ability to switch to promiscuous mode is very common, and Linux exposes generic APIs to switch an interface to promiscuous mode if the driver supports it.
