I needed that paragraph about reading. I think I absorb text in a similar way - not really "sounding out words", but somehow just absorbing concepts. Your explanation is a lot clearer than my hand-wavy rationalisation. It makes me not very good at anagram/word rearranging/finding games where you have to test for a large number of possibilities.
