There's a lot of variation in how many subjects one can be competent at. A less charitable explanation: I regularly see folks who've grocery shopped for decades and still don't move their cart to the side when they're working thru their options. The lessons about not being an obstacle are continually taught, yet the understanding never develops. From this we can infer that some abilities can be developed in some people. And that's the whole of it.
