Ask HN: Would you move to another state for a job?
I’m curious what the HN community thinks about moving for work these days.
It feels harder to land a good job locally, especially if you’re not in a big tech hub. Remote roles still exist, but they seem fewer than before, and more employers want people back in the office at least a few days a week.
On the other hand, moving for a promising opportunity opens up a bigger job market.
So it’s a trade-off:
- You risk uprooting your life for a new job.
- But if you stick only to local or fully remote roles, you may be closing doors.
Would you move to another state for a job right now? Or stay put and wait for something local/remote?

- khedoros1 1y agoI did. But my family was miserable, so we moved back. Right now I'm working remotely for a job on the other end of the same state.
- marssaxman 1y agoWhen I looked for a new job several months ago, the majority of positions I saw were remote. There may be fewer than before, but the share still seems to be quite large. I do live in a tech hub, so there were good local options, but I ended up with a remote job anyway - they happened to have the most interesting work to offer. I have moved long distances for work before, and in principle wouldn't mind doing so again, if I thought it would be an enjoyable place to live (you could not pay me enough to move to the suburbs!), but this time around I was not willing to consider it because of the disruption it would create for my family. Once the kiddo graduates, it'll be a different story.
