I'm looking at the bar chart 'causes of death in 2023' and seeing 7.8% classified as accidents.
In the UK the figure appears to be much lower if I have understood the ONS report correctly (link to spreadsheet top right).
I'm wondering at the disparity and where it comes from. Real or an artifact of definitions in use when certifying deaths?

(scroll down in the spreadsheet for the figures for all people in England and Wales, the first table is non-residents only)

- rsynnott 1y agoThe UK has 2.6 road deaths per 100k people per year. The US has 14.2. The discrepancy is probably mostly driven by this (though the US does also have far lower workplace safety standards). Part of this is that Americans drive far greater distances, but even adjusted for distance, the US has about twice the deaths per km.

- rsynnott 1y agoOh, huh, that's actually a bigger discrepancy than the stats I was looking at (from 2022 for the UK and 2021 for the US, from wikipedia). Looks like the UK is down modestly since then, the US up modestly.
