If you want up-to-date, use testing, which is at python 2.7.3: http://packages.debian.org/search?suite=wheezy&searchon=names&keywords=python http://packages.debian.org/search?suite=wheezy&searchon=... They both have python3 versions available, too (3.1.3 and 3.2.3 respectively). There are legitimate complaints about Debian, but being stuck on python 2.4 is not one of them.
