Places like Hacker News are safe because they toe the line and ensure "inconvenient topics" aren't popular or promoted. It's fully baked into their rules and it's generally accepted as a Good Thing somehow. Anti-censorship lip-service out of one side of their mouth and rampant clampdown on "unacceptable conversations" within their VC safe space.
