I can only imagine the ZFS license is not free enough for Debian (not a rant).
- em-bee 1y agothe problem is less how free it is. as far as i know it is free enough. but the license is simply incompatible with the GPLv2 and therefore a combined program may not be distributed, because by distributing it you would violate the GPL license of the kernel.
