I'm thrilled with this idea, but I also saw an article very similar to this years ago. I won't pretend to understand the engineering behind it, but I would like to understand exactly how far into the future this will apear. Is it feasible that this could actually happen in 2027?

It's be surprising if they were first at that point, but otherwise yes. Like the article says, lots of manufacturers are experimenting with solid state batteries and we've already seen prototypes.
