As always, Simon knows what he is talking about and neatly describes the whole situation.
However, it's not the "coding" part of "vibe coding" that is the (semantic) problem, it's the "vibe" part.
Replacing "coding" with engineering, but keeping the "vibe" part, still conveys the meaning of not really knowing what you do, but now in an even larger surface area.
It's a lot more boring, but I'm fine with "AI-assisted software engineering" as the other-end-of-the-spectrum name opposite of "vibe coding".

- arresin 1y agoYou are seeing someone asking for a completely voluntary subscription fee for very valuable (I find it at least) work that they give away completely for free—not to mention all the OSS software he has created—and yet you are construing that as being somehow greedy or money grubbing or sleazy.
- simonw 1y agoHah, yeah that's genuinely one of my more successful attempts at capitalism.
- davidatbu 1y agoJust want to say that as an AI engineer, you and the Latent Space folks are doing work that is extremely useful to me. Without y'all, I'd be forced to doom scroll on X to catch up on the latest developments. I wanted to explicitly highlight the utility of what you do because of surrounding comments that suggest/imply otherwise. Thank you Simon!
