I don’t get why feminists are opposed to the idea of AI girlfriends. If it makes some men stop bothering real women, isn’t it a win?

I don’t get why feminists are opposed to the idea of AI girlfriends. If it makes some men stop bothering real women, isn’t it a win?
- kelseyfrog 1y agoWhat do you suppose the goal of feminism is?
- xigoi 1y agoMaking societial changes that benefit women?
- kelseyfrog 1y agoThat's actually one of the methods to achieve the goal of gender equality and the liberation of women from restrictive gender roles. If those goals were ever achieved, the need to make those societal changes would vanish.
- xigoi 1y agoAnyway, how is that relevant to my original comment?
- kelseyfrog 1y agoBecause not being bothered by men is tangential to gender equality and the liberation of women from restrictive gender roles. The original comment confuses the goals of feminism.
- xigoi 1y agoWeird. I see things like objectification, catcalling, sexual harassment, rape, etc. being discussed a lot in feminist spaces.
- UncleMeat 1y agoDo we have any reason to believe that men using AI as a substitute girlfriend are less likely to do these sorts of things?
- naasking 1y ago> Do we have any reason to believe that men using AI as a substitute girlfriend are less likely to do these sorts of things? Yes, because on aggregate, it entirely eliminates intimate partner violence from this group.
- xigoi 1y agoIntimate partner violence is committed only by men who have a partner, so that’s one thing it wouldn’t help with.
- naasking 1y agoYou're assuming that only men who couldn't get a partner would be lured away by these AI girlfriends. This assumption is incorrect, thus my original argument stands.
- xigoi 1y agoIf we assume that the AI is convincing enough to satisfy at least some of them (which is probably not the case currently, but may be in the future), then of course.
- kelseyfrog 1y agoIt sounds like you're trying to say feminism is primarily about those things. Is that right?
- xigoi 1y agoNo. They’re just some of the many things that modern feminism is about.
- subscribed 1y agoIf these men will stop needing women then no, it's not the _right kind of ein_ :)
- xigoi 1y agoOf course they would still need women. It’s hard to live in society while avoiding half of all people. They would just (ideally) stop showing romantic/sexual interest (or at least reduce it).
