AMD and OpenAI announce strategic partnership to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs
- fnands 1y agoFun to see we are now measuring GPUs in gigawatts
- dnadler 1y agoI’ve been wondering about this. It used to be that different chip makers had different efficiencies, and so measuring two different companies chips in gigawatts wouldn’t be a good apples to apples comparison. Is that still true or has the gap narrowed? Or have GPUs always been similar across the board and it’s CPUs that have more disparity?
- monster_truck 1y ago1 Gigawatt is only 400,000 Instinct MI450's, which is the size of the first deployment in the second half of next year. They've agreed to buy 2,000,000 GPUs over a span of many years.
- dnadler 1y agoSoftware aside, does AMD have a potential strategic advantage in the long term since they are also producing top tier CPUs? Is there some future benefit to tightly integrating their products? IIRC NVidia partnered with intel for this purpose, right?
- Medea 1y agoThis deal is odd. OpenAI gets AMD chips but also a chance to own a big part of AMD if things go well. It makes AMD look stronger on paper, but it is risky. These kinds of deals can hide problems and make a bubble. It feels more like hype than real long-term value.
- htrp 1y agoalso the OpenAI gets basically an option to own 10% of AMD
