“Retaliation” is not the word I would use. Retaliation is the wrong reason for any decision in domestic politics. The right’s narrative of retaliation for imagined wrongs is a big part of the reason we’re in this position in the first place. (“The cruelty is the point.”) On the other hand, re-leveling the playing field will be important — if the playing field even still exists in a few years.
