Once I used IP geolocation to track down a credit card fraudster to within 2 blocks of his residence in Quezon City, Philippines
He ran the whole thing from his home internet connection.
- dewey 1y agoHow did you confirm that? Residential proxies are a thing.
- aussieguy1234 1y agoThat is another possibility, but I doubt it in this case, they didn't seem very sophisticated.
- gruez 1y ago>to track down a credit card fraudster to within 2 blocks of his residence Then what? You're going to send seal team six to arrest him? 2 blocks might as well be 200 miles.
- grosswait 1y agoSome folks work in cybersecurity and law, so the fact they know this implies some action was taken.
- aussieguy1234 1y agoThis was just a regular company, I just happened to be the person who was responsible for stopping the credit card testing attacks. In this case I posted the info in our company slack, where everyone could see it. I did manage to stop the attack. As far as other action goes, that wasn't really my call, so i'm not sure if any further action was taken. The Philippines is a notoriously corrupt country, so its likely that even if authorities there got involved, no real action would get taken, assuming those responsible for the attack had enough pesos to pay bribes.
