OpenAI desperately wants to compete at the same level as the big tech firms. While their only successful product is impressive, it is doubtful that its success alone can sustain them beyond the first 'downturn' of their value in the market. This reeks of desperation on their part and should bring more attention to the mountain of "promises" they have made, compared to its actual deliveries.

Stated another way, they don't have a ready-made DoubleClick to buy the way Google did. The big money is in being the ad network not just the purveyors of billboards.

  Most of Googles ad money comes from their own properties, so being the billboard is still the big moneymaker.
