So if you were hiring a coder, would you disregard their preferred language and domain of expertise completely, and just expect them to adapt to the task at hand? I'm sure good coders can do just that (just like good designers can be flexible), but it still seems counter-productive not to aim for the best possible match first.

  No idea why I got down voted. I am both a designer and a developer and I feel I have some credibility when I say, design and development are completely different.
