Realistically, it would be local competition completely under Brussels' thumb.
- troupo 1y agoAh yes, the heavy Brussels thumb of ... checks notes ... "don't track your users, don't hinder competition and let people chose if they want algorithmically generated slop"
- gruez 1y agoDon't forget chat control! We would want pedophiles and criminals to have access to phones, now do we?
- wizzwizz4 1y agoChat Control hasn't happened, and if it does, the court will shut it down. (It's still worth fighting, but it's not something that non-activists need to worry about.)
- AAAAaccountAAAA 1y agoOne can't rely on courts only to protect civil freedoms. If and when totalitarian measures become politically acceptable and desired, the politicians will simply amend the EU treaties and national constitutions to allow mass surveillance, and disband or subvert CoE and other limitations to their power.
- zoul 1y agoOh yes. As opposed to the “kiss the ring or else” market freedoms of the US.
- AAAAaccountAAAA 1y agoSo far, they have implemented only cosmetic measures to address those issues, while seriously considering outrageous things like Chat Control.
