I try to make a point of upvoting well-written contentious posts which I disagree with. I actually end up upvoting many of the posts I respond to contrarily which seem to get unfair downvotes. As for the effect of karma on my own actions, I know that I've refrained from posting poorly-reasoned or hasty posts even after I've written them. I try to get citations and other supporting evidence too, rather than just posting an unsupported opinion.
