- tlack 14y ago+1. The search results for this could merge in commits and be a really valuable way to figure out whats going on in a well factored, modular codebase where things can be spread out in many different tangled folders. Something like 'ack for github' would be fantastic.
- rhizome 14y agoFor a site like GitHub, I would imagine this is a huge engineering effort to do right. For instance, in a plain vanilla code search facility, how would you expire results efficiently when the text can change from minute to minute (to seconds, to even less)?
- JoelMcCracken 14y agoSuper efficient search would be great and idea, but slightly delayed searching is perfectly acceptable imo. Especially because I am not necessarily looking for extremely up-to-date changes.
- rhizome 14y agoEven slightly-delayed searching would be a huge deal, engineeringwise.
- Osmose 14y agoThey're working on it: Check out the search box in the right side of this screenshot from a github blog post a week or so ago: https://a248.e.akamai.net/camo.github.com/367fe330bc1ad4431b2a5a3448d21bc59743fc7e/687474703a2f2f6769746875622d696d616765732e73332e616d617a6f6e6177732e636f6d2f626c6f672f323031322f6b656570696e672d6769746875622d666173742f6d697373696f6e2d636f6e74726f6c2e706e67 https://a248.e.akamai.net/camo.github.com/367fe330bc1ad4431b... The post itself mentioned: "Spoiler alert: you might notice a few things in this screenshot that haven’t fully shipped yet."
