I know people who have gone through hunger strikes while locked up. The standard facility policy in these situations is to try and break at least one person.
They will start brining in food that will make the detainees' eyes pop out of their heads: donuts, McDonald's, ice cream, sodas etc, to try to make someone eat. Bearing in mind that these people would have been eating the smallest portions of inedible slop for weeks before this.
Also, the facility will take everything you own from you to make sure you're not hiding any food. So they won't have any books or anything to do. Probably they will be put into isolation to try to stop the strike spreading too.
