The only time I've ever seen "jail" spelled this way was in Elden Ring, and I had to look it up to see how it's supposed to be pronounced to learn that it's an Old English way of spelling "jail" and is pronounced like "jail".
Curious if you've been playing a lot of Elden Ring or if there's another reason you chose this spelling.
- littlekey 1y agoI've seen it a couple of times from British writers. But it's definitely a weird spelling that's on its way out.
- pmyteh 1y agoCommon until a hundred years or so ago. We also don't have the jail/prison distinction that the US has, and they're all officially called "His Majesty's Prison X" so it's not a common word in British English anymore, except in US import. So "jail" is now standard if used.
- mvdtnz 1y agoObnoxious attention-seeking Australians like to do this. It's best not to respond to them, you're giving them exactly what they want.
