I tried to find sources to verify and it wasn’t as easy as I thought. I just assumed that shielding your components from EMI would shield them from voltage spikes due to EMI. Reverse voltages from stray fields can definitely kill a gate.

  Sure. But but there's a difference between not walking across a carpet with them on a dry day and in situ shielding to prevent EMI.
