"I would say it should be taught in school." That depends on what you go to school for. If you're going for training in Microsoft technologies -- to a technical college or the like, that's fine. If you're going to what's supposed to be a computer science program, they should teach general computing principles using, whenever possible, free software that has been around for a while and will continue to be around for a while. (Yes, that means they shouldn't teach Rails either.)
