  http://x.google.com http://x.google.com and http://linux.google.com http://linux.google.com don't work; Google is not hosting them.

  Are you sure you're seeing a page from Google? http is subject to manipulation by anyone on your network path.

  Update: it was my ISP. After switching networks and flushing the cache, it fails for me too. Sorry for the mistake :( (Clicked "hide" option in the post from my side,don't know if it is possible for me to delete it)

  there are sites where u can pop in a dname and get results from different servers outside of your isp influence. useful in such a case to get an idea if everyone has a similar response
